言及しておきたい一般的な 6.3 の重要な点がいくつかあります。一文では記 述できない大きな項目のみを記します。詳細な変更点の一覧を必ず読み直して 下さい。
一点目は、副 SELECT を持つようになった点です。 これができるようになりましたので、副 SELECT がなければ SQL はかなり限定 された言語であると言わせてください。 副 SELECT は重要な機能ですので、副 SELECT が問い合わせのより良い解法を提 供する箇所があるかコードを再調査すべきです。 副 SELECT を使用した方が良いと考えるところが多くあることがわかるでしょう。 Vadim 氏は副 SELECT によって、この先 SQL が大きく発展していく方向と、完全 にそれが機能することを示してくれました。 考慮しなければならないことは、副 SELECT を対象リストには使用できないと言う 点だけです。
2 番目は、6.3 ではデフォルトで TCP/IP ではなく unix ドメインのソケット が使われる点です。 他のマシンからの接続を行なうためには、postmaster の新しいオプション -i を使わなければなりません。そして、もちろん、pg_hba.conf を編集しなけれ ばなりません。 また、このため pg_hba.conf の書式が変更されました。
3 番目は char() のフィールドは varchar() や text よりも高速にアクセス できるようになりました。 特に text とvarchar()はこの型の最初のカラムの後のカラムへのアクセスに はペナルティを持っています。 char() もまた、このアクセスペナルティを持っていましたが、これをやめま した。 いくつかのテーブル、特に、varchar() もしくは text として定義した短い文 字からなるカラムがあるテーブルの再設計を行なった方がいいかもしれません。 これと他の変更によって、6.3 は前のリリースに比べていっそう高速になりま した。
Unix ファイルに全く依存しないパスワードの定義ができるようになりました。 新しい SQL USER コマンドがあります。 より詳細な情報については pg_hba.conf マニュアルページを参照して下さい。 ユーザの情報とパスワードを保存する pg_shadow という新しいテーブルがあ ります。 これはデフォルトではpostgres スーパユーザのみから SELECTを実行できます。 pg_user はpg_shadow のビューになりました。こちらは PUBLIC から SELECT を実行できます。 アプリケーションを変更することなく pg_user を使用し続けるべきです。
ユーザが作成したテーブルは、デフォルトで PUBLIC に対して SELECT 権限 を持たなくなりました。 この理由は、ANSI 標準にて必要とされたことです。 もちろん テーブルを作成した後に必要な権限を与えることができます。 システムテーブルは PUBLIC から SELECT を実行できる状態のままです。
また実際のデッドロックを検出するコードを持つようになりました。60 秒 間のタイムアウトは不要です。 新しいロック用コードは FIFO バッファを実装しましたので、高負荷状態で のリソース不足がより少なくなりました。
これまでのリリースでは、不十分な文書について多くの不平がありました。 Thomas 氏は、このリリースで多くの新規マニュアルを作成しました。 doc/ ディレクトリを見て下さい。
性能を向上させるために、time travel を削除しました。しかし、これはトリ ガを使って実装することができます。（pgsql/contrib/spi/README を参照し て下さい。） 型、演算子などのために新しい \d コマンドを試して下さい。 また、ビューは、その元になったテーブルに基づくことなく、独自に権限を持 つようになりました。ですので、権限の設定は別途行なわなければなりません。 Postgres と通信するいくつかの新しい方法につ いては/pgsql/interfaces を見て下さい。
これは既存のユーザへの説明を本当に必要とする最初のリリースです。 多くの方法でこの説明が必要です。なぜなら新しいリリースでは多くの制限が 取り除かれ、ユーザが使用してきた回避方法が不要になったからです。
全ての Postgres の以前のリリースからデータ を移行する際には、pg_dump もしくは pg_dumpall を使用したダンプ/リストアが必 要です。
